The stone stops the air inside the cup escaping when you add the water so that you end up with a hole. I use a cup with sloped sides as I think it might help with its removal once the ice has formed. After the water in step 3 has begun to freeze I often add a bit more water to fully encapsulate the leaves.
They look just as beautiful when they begin to melt.
